Chipmakers and platform developers spoke of neural engines and local machine learning with the zeal of pioneers charting new worlds. Yet, when it came to the people who actually make the purchases, a different landscape came into view — one where such features seemed more like mirages on the horizon than the solid ground beneath their feet.

When a leading voice from Dell stepped up to the microphone ahead of the show, he offered an almost philosophical reflection on this shift. Far from dismissing AI outright, he acknowledged a simple observation drawn from years of consumer interaction: most people are not choosing their next computer because it can “think” with them. For many buyers, the practical matters of battery life, price, responsiveness, and reliability still hold far more weight than the abstract promise of embedded intelligence.

Behind this admission lies a broader story about expectations and reality. For years, the industry has placed AI at the center of its narrative, imagining that the next leap in personal computing would come from machines that anticipate needs before they are spoken. Too often, the answers were unclear, if not entirely opaque.

Dell’s pivot — not away from AI capability itself, because every new device still includes dedicated silicon for such tasks — but away from presenting it as a primary selling point, feels almost like a poet’s concession. It is as if the company has stopped shouting at the top of its lungs and instead chosen to speak in measured tones, letting the authentic needs of users guide its message.

This is not to say AI is dead in personal computing. Far from it; the potential for localized AI processing remains a meaningful technological advance, with use cases that will unfold over years rather than headlines. But for now, the average customer seems content to value what they can immediately see and touch. And in that simple preference lies a lesson for the industry: innovation must be intuitive before it can be adopted.

As the lights dim on CES 2026 and the world’s largest PC maker acknowledges this subtle truth, one senses not defeat, but a kind of quiet realignment — an invitation for technology to meet users where they truly are, not where the buzzword horizon suggests they should be.
