KYIV, Ukraine — Russia has opened a dangerous new chapter in its long-range strike campaign against Ukraine’s capital, launching repeated drone attacks aimed directly at critical transport infrastructure across the Dnipro River. A series of targeted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) strikes hit Kyiv’s strategic Southern Bridge (Pivdennyi Bridge), severely damaging key structural elements and forcing local authorities to shut down the vital transit corridor.
Russian attack drones struck the Southern Bridge multiple times. Air defense units attempted to intercept the incoming drones over the Dnipro River, but several warheads penetrated the capital's defense perimeter.
The explosions targeted the crossing's support structures and deck. Local officials reported damage to a primary support pier, guardrails, the main asphalt roadway, and the protective concrete shielding surrounding the underground subway tracks. One of the initial strikes occurred as a packed metro train was actively making the crossing; while dust and debris filled the carriages, no civilian passengers sustained physical injuries.
Emergency responder crews and bomb disposal units quickly cordoned off the area to secure unexploded ordinance and douse localized blazes.
The strikes mark a significant tactical shift, as major bridge crossings in Kyiv had largely avoided direct hit damage earlier in the war. In response to the damage, the Kyiv City State Administration fully closed the Southern Bridge to all vehicular traffic and metro transit.
The closure triggered immediate transit disruption across the capital. Traffic restrictions were enacted on neighboring crossings—including the Paton Bridge and the Metro Bridge—to prevent structural strain and accommodate emergency inspections. Commuters faced massive gridlock along both banks of the Dnipro as municipal authorities scrambled to reroute bus lines across the remaining functional bridges.
Military analysts view the attacks as a calculated attempt to sever transport links between Kyiv's right and left banks, stretching city emergency services and stalling internal supply lines. Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned residents that the targeting of urban transport arteries signals a broader effort to destabilize everyday life in the capital.
Structural engineers continue to conduct detailed assessments on the bridge's main piers and rail deck to determine the timeline for repairs, while city officials hold emergency defense meetings to adapt Kyiv's transit logistics under ongoing threat.
