The Park Was for Playing; Now It Is a Crime Scene

There is a particular kind of sorrow that arrives when a place meant for childhood—a park, a football field, a Saturday afternoon—becomes the scene of violence. On Saturday evening at Leon Day Park in Baltimore, a 12-year-old girl was watching a youth football game. It was homecoming for the league, a day of celebration and community. Two men began arguing, reportedly over a parking space. Both pulled guns. They fired at each other. And the girl, who was simply there to watch, was struck and killed.

The Baltimore Police Department responded to the 1200 block of North Franklintown Road at approximately 6:15 p.m. Officers arrived to find the 12-year-old girl and a 25-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to hospitals, where the girl was pronounced dead. Two other men, ages 28 and 23, walked into area hospitals with gunshot wounds. All three adult victims were listed in stable condition with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Police Commissioner Richard Worley described the events with a bluntness that reflected the senselessness of what had occurred. “Two grown men got into an argument, and now a 12-year-old is gone,” he said. “What happened out here today is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen in my life because that baby was just out here, at homecoming for this youth football league... trying to keep young people safe”. He said the dispute most likely began over a “stupid parking spot” and that the men were “two cowards” who pulled guns on each other. Police are searching for at least two suspects, described as adult men. No arrests had been announced as of Saturday night.

Mayor Brandon Scott issued an emotional statement, saying the girl’s death would have a profound impact on the community. “We’re never gonna see her full potential,” he said. “Her family’s gonna be hurting for this for the rest of their life. Her classmates are going to be hurting, her community’s going to be hurting”. The park, which had been filled with families and young athletes, became a crime scene. North Franklintown Road was closed at North Ellamont Street as investigators worked. Police have urged anyone with information to contact them or Metro Crime Stoppers.

The shooting has renewed questions about gun violence in Baltimore and the ways in which disputes between adults can end the life of a child who had no part in the conflict. For the family of the 12-year-old, the afternoon that began with a football game ended with a loss that cannot be measured. For the community that gathered at Leon Day Park, the memory of that evening will remain—a reminder of how quickly a place of play can become a place of grief.
