SPANGDAHLEM, Germany — A U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon assigned to the 52nd Fighter Wing crashed during approach at Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany, injuring the pilot, who successfully ejected before impact.
The high-speed incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time, triggering an immediate multi-agency emergency response and an official military investigation.
According to military officials and German air traffic control, the aircraft was returning to base as part of a four-jet formation following a routine training exercise. As two of the jets entered their final landing approach, one F-16 went down near the perimeter of the airfield.
The pilot managed to trigger the ejection seat prior to impact and was located shortly after by emergency crews. Paramedics treated the pilot at the scene before transferring them to a nearby medical facility for further evaluation and care. Meanwhile, the remaining three F-16s in the formation safely diverted and landed at Ramstein Air Base.
