Expressway Chaos: Fully Loaded Truck Overturns Along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

LAGOS — Commuters and freight operators faced severe travel disruptions along the heavily traveled Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after a fully loaded cargo truck lost control and overturned along the roadside shoulder.

The accident occurred during early on Thursday morning transit hours, a critical window for interstate commerce connecting Lagos ports to inland commercial hubs. According to eyewitnesses, the heavy-duty vehicle swayed dangerously before tipping onto its side, spilling its dense cargo along the highway drainage channel and bringing surrounding traffic to a crawl.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officers and traffic management officials promptly arrived at the scene to secure the area and divert oncoming traffic. Recovery crews deployed heavy-lift tow vehicles and cranes to clear the spilled load and stabilize the overturned vehicle.

First responders confirmed that while the driver and conductor managed to exit the cabin with minor injuries, the sheer weight of the vehicle presented complex challenges for recovery teams working to clear the right-of-way.

"The truck lost balance as it navigated the outer lane, sending cargo tumbling onto the shoulder," stated a motorist who witnessed the incident. "Thankfully, no secondary vehicles were crushed when it went down."

The incident triggered widespread traffic snarls stretching several kilometers back toward the main toll points. Law enforcement officers worked continuously to manage rubbernecking drivers and maintain a steady flow through reduced lane capacity.

Sector commanders have urged heavy-vehicle operators to adhere strictly to axle load limits and conduct pre-trip mechanical checks, citing freight overloading and tire bursts as recurring hazards on high-speed arterial corridors. Emergency crews remain on-site finalizing the road clearance to restore normal traffic flow.

In light of the frequent obstruction caused by articulated vehicles along this vital trade route, state transport unions and logistics agencies have pledged to set up dedicated rapid-response towing hubs along critical stretches of the expressway. Officials hope that positioning specialized heavy-recovery equipment closer to accident hotspots will drastically reduce clearance times and minimize economic losses caused by prolonged corridor gridlocks.
