Bobi Wine, the leader of Uganda’s National Unity Platform (NUP), has been in hiding since January 15, 2026, after a highly disputed presidential election in which he lost to incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who declared victory with nearly 72% of the vote. Wine alleges widespread fraud during the election and has since fled what he describes as a violent raid by military and police forces on his home.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the president's son and the head of the Ugandan military, has publicly threatened Wine, giving him 48 hours to surrender and warning that failure to comply would result in being treated as an outlaw. He has mocked Wine with derogatory nicknames and stated, “We have killed 22 NUP terrorists since last week.” Such inflammatory statements have heightened fears of further violence against opposition members.
Reports indicate that several of Wine’s supporters were arrested in the wake of the election, with the military reportedly engaging in violent crackdowns on protests. Wine’s family has also endured harassment, including his wife being severely beaten and hospitalized during the raid.
Despite the threats, Wine has remained defiant, utilizing social media to address his supporters and call for peaceful protests against what he deems an illegitimate government. He has emphasized that the election results do not reflect the true will of the people and pointed out irregularities such as ballot stuffing and the unlawful shutdown of the internet during the voting period.
As the situation in Uganda escalates, Wine continues to advocate for democracy and human rights, calling on the international community to respond to the ongoing repression. He remains committed to his role as a political leader, even as he navigates the dangers of his current circumstances. His defiance resonates with many young Ugandans, who have increasingly turned to him for hope amid the long-standing regime of Museveni.
