U.S. and Iran Exchange Intense New Attacks After Trump Says Ceasefire Is “Over”

The United States and Iran exchanged intense new attacks after President Donald Trump declared that the interim ceasefire was effectively finished.

Hours earlier, Trump said Iran’s attacks on vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz signaled the end of the fragile pause in fighting. In response, the U.S. carried out another round of strikes on Wednesday night, according to U.S. officials, with the military saying the actions were intended to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the strait. Iranian state media reported explosions in several locations, including southern port areas such as Bandar Abbas and Sirik, along with Bushehr—home to Iran’s nuclear power complex. ABC7 New York

Trump later warned that if attacks on shipping happen again, the situation would worsen, while also suggesting the U.S. military action could escalate quickly. He also reiterated threats to target or pressure Iran’s civilian infrastructure, and to seize control of key oil-related assets such as Kharg Island—moves that have raised further concerns about widening disruption to energy shipments through a corridor vital to global trade.

Iran, for its part, said it would defend itself and accused the U.S. of violating the terms of the interim arrangement. Negotiators on both sides continued to discuss the broader terms of a longer-term settlement, though Trump’s remarks fed uncertainty about whether talks could prevent further escalation.
