Two Teenagers Dead in Dominican Republic: Motorcycle Slams Into Truck on Highway, Collision Under Investigation

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic— Two teenagers were killed when a motorcycle and a truck crashed on a highway in the Dominican Republic on October 16, 2026, and their bodies were found meters from the twisted bike. The truck was intact. The motorcycle was not.

DIGESETT, the traffic authority, said the crash occurred on the Duarte Highway near La Vega in the afternoon. The teenagers, aged 16 and 17, were riding north without helmets, according to preliminary information. They struck the side of a freight truck making a U-turn. The impact threw both riders.

Bystanders tried to help. One driver used his truck to block traffic. An ambulance arrived 25 minutes later. Both teenagers were declared dead at the scene. The truck driver stayed and was taken into custody for questioning. He tested negative for alcohol in a field test.

Listín Diario reported that motorcycle fatalities account for more than 60% of road deaths in the Dominican Republic. Teenagers often ride without licenses, helmets, or training. Trucks making informal turns on highways add to the risk. Enforcement is spotty outside the capital.

A DIGESETT officer at the scene said, "We are verifying if the motorcycle had lights and if the truck had authorization to turn there. The highway is not designed for U-turns at that point." He said witnesses are being interviewed and cameras from a nearby gas station will be reviewed.

The families of the victims arrived within an hour. They were held behind a police line. A relative shouted the name of one boy. Officers kept traffic moving slowly in one lane. Debris was scattered over 30 meters.

The Ministry of Public Health has repeatedly flagged the Duarte corridor for high motorcycle mortality. Proposals for dedicated motorcycle lanes and stricter licensing have stalled. Local schools have launched helmet campaigns with little funding.

The truck was impounded for mechanical inspection. The prosecutor's office said it will determine if the driver is charged with negligent homicide or released after statement. The highway reopened after two hours.

By evening, candles were placed where the motorcycle lay. The road was wet from a brief rain. Traffic returned to speed.
