“Two Links and a Price Tag: Facebook’s New Experiment in Paid Sharing”

There’s a certain irony in the way the digital world continues to evolve: platforms once freely open to unfettered sharing now gently nudge users toward paying for the very basic act of connecting others to the wider web. This week, a new twist in that story emerged as Facebook began testing limits on how many external links some users can share without a paid subscription—a move that has creators, businesses, and everyday users pausing to consider what freedom of expression means in the age of monetized social media.

Under this limited experiment, a portion of Facebook professional mode profiles and Pages are being restricted to just two link‑sharing posts per month unless they subscribe to Meta Verified, a paid tier that starts at about £9.99 per month for UK users. Meta says the test is designed to gauge whether allowing more link posts could be a valuable benefit that encourages users to subscribe to its paid services.

At its core, this isn’t solely a question of link counts: it’s a reflection of how social platforms are increasingly reshaping their value propositions. For many creators, bloggers, and small businesses, sharing links is a lifeline—a way to direct audiences to original work, newsletters, e‑commerce shops, or deeper content outside the walled garden of Facebook itself. Limiting that ability unless one pays may be seen less as a feature test and more as pay‑to‑play in a world where digital reach already feels uncertain.

Meta says the limit currently applies only to organic posts containing outbound links; links in comments, affiliate links, and links to Meta‑owned platforms like Instagram or WhatsApp are unaffected. It also notes that publishers are not included in this test yet, though the change could still influence how widely external content reaches audiences through shares and reposts.

Critics see a broader trend at play: the gradual shift away from the “open web” ideal toward platform‑centric engagement, where users are encouraged to create and consume content within the footprint of the platform itself. Some social media experts suggest this reflects Meta’s longer‑term strategy to monetise aspects of the network that once served as open corridors to the broader internet.

For users on the receiving end of this experiment, the change raises practical questions. If sharing more than two links a month—something many content creators or small businesses routinely do—requires a subscription, what does that mean for organic reach and fair access? And as platforms increasingly test paywalls around basic network features, how will communities adapt when open sharing begins to carry a price tag?

Facebook’s test may be small and limited in scope today, but it points to a larger conversation about how social media platforms balance monetisation with the open exchange of ideas. Whether this experiment becomes a broader policy—or simply a footnote in Facebook’s evolving business model—remains to be seen. But for now, it marks another step in the unfolding story of how we connect, share, and pay for digital participation.
