Two Dead Following Violent Incident at School Near Berlin

GOSEN-NEU ZITTAU, GERMANY — Two people were killed following a violent attack at a private school in the town of Gosen-Neu Zittau, just east of Berlin, on Thursday afternoon, August 27, 2026. Authorities confirmed that a 19-year-old German suspect was arrested shortly after the incident.

Emergency services responded around 1:45 p.m. local time after receiving emergency calls regarding an ongoing attack on the Docemus private school campus. Upon arrival, first responders found two people suffering from fatal injuries who died at the scene despite immediate efforts to provide medical care. The victims were identified as an 18-year-old female student at the school and a 30-year-old man who attempted to intervene and halt the attack.

Police officers quickly secured the campus and took the 19-year-old male suspect into custody. Early reports indicate that the suspect was the former boyfriend of the female victim, leading investigators to treat the attack as a crime motivated by a personal relationship rather than an indiscriminate rampage. Local media reports noted that at least two additional individuals sustained injuries during the assault.

Law enforcement authorities emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the surrounding community or the school campus. Forensic teams remained on-site to secure evidence and establish the full timeline of events, while support services were deployed to assist traumatized students and staff members.

Brandenburg state officials and local community leaders expressed shock and condolences following the tragic event, with local education authorities confirming that crisis intervention specialists and grief counselors will remain on site over the coming days to assist students, teachers, and affected families. Flags at regional public buildings were lowered to half-mast in tribute to the victims, including the bystander praised by authorities for his selfless attempt to intervene.

Public prosecutors in Frankfurt (Oder) have formally taken over the homicide investigation and are expected to present the 19-year-old suspect before a magistrate judge for an arraignment and detention hearing. Investigators are continuing to interview eyewitnesses, review digital evidence, and analyze physical items recovered from the scene to determine the exact motive and sequence of events leading up to the assault.
