Deluge in Spain: Torrential Rain Batters Eastern Region, Leaving 4 Dead

VALENCIA, Spain — Severe downpours and raging flash floods have battered eastern Spain and parts of the Mediterranean coast, leaving at least four people dead, triggering widespread evacuations, and causing extensive structural damage across several coastal towns.

The severe weather system unleashed extraordinary rainfall, dumping up to 600 to 700 liters per square meter in key areas of the Valencia and Alicante regions. The deluge rapidly turned urban streets into rushing rivers, submerging vehicles, inundating homes, and trapping residents inside their properties.

Emergency services conducted over 400 air and land rescues. In the worst-hit coastal town of Oliva, emergency personnel used helicopters to airlift stranded residents from rooftops as floodwaters rose around their homes. Over 2,000 individuals across the region were forced to evacuate, while local authorities temporarily instructed hundreds of thousands of residents to remain indoors until weather conditions began to stabilize.

"We are talking about three deaths in our region... emergency teams are working continuously to secure affected areas and assist displaced families."— Juan Francisco Pérez Llorca, Valencia Regional President

Local officials confirmed four fatalities linked directly to the severe weather: two victims were reported in the coastal town of Oliva—a 79-year-old woman found inside her flooded home and a man who suffered a fatal cardiac event at a local campsite; another woman drowned along the coast near Sagunto, north of Valencia; and a final victim lost their life in Catalonia after being swept away by a swollen river.

Classes were suspended in more than 40 towns across Valencia and Alicante, while transport networks, coastal roads, and rail services suffered severe disruptions. The nearby Balearic Islands, including Mallorca and Ibiza, also reported flooded thoroughfares and localized damage.

Spain's State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) classified the rainfall event as exceptionally severe. Experts pointed to significantly elevated Mediterranean Sea temperatures as a key contributor to the unprecedented atmospheric moisture and intensity of the storm system.

As floodwaters slowly recede, municipal teams, emergency personnel, and residents are beginning the arduous cleanup process, evaluating the extensive damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and private property.
