Nuremberg, Germany— A high-speed multi-car collision ripped through the A9 motorway near Nuremberg on October 24, 2026, killing two people and leaving five others in critical condition.
The crash happened on the northbound carriageway between the Nuremberg-Fischbach and Nuremberg-Feucht junctions. Police said five cars were traveling at high speed when one braked hard, triggering a chain reaction. Two cars spun and were struck side-on. One caught fire.
First responders found wreckage spread over 200 meters. Two occupants were dead inside their vehicles. Five others were trapped and had to be cut free. Rescue helicopters landed on the closed autobahn to airlift two victims to Klinikum Nürnberg. The others went by ambulance.
The autobahn was fully closed. Traffic backed up for 12 kilometers. The Central Franconia police diverted heavy trucks to the A6 and A73. Cleanup crews worked around fuel spills and twisted guardrails. The road surface was gouged and had to be inspected for structural damage.
A police spokesman said, "Speed was a factor. We have dashcam footage showing late lane changes before the impact." Investigators seized onboard data recorders and will check whether adaptive cruise systems were engaged. Alcohol tests on surviving drivers were negative.
Witnesses said traffic had been flowing at 160 to 180 km/h, normal for that unrestricted section. One driver told police, "It happened in a second. Brake lights, smoke, then cars everywhere." The A9 is known for high-speed differentials between trucks limited to 80 and cars traveling twice as fast.
Deutsche Autobahn GmbH said the barrier system functioned but will be replaced. The fire brigade reported the burning vehicle was an electric sedan, which complicated extinguishing due to battery thermal runaway. A special containment container was brought in.
Prosecutors in Nuremberg-Fürth opened an investigation for negligent homicide and reckless driving. The identities of the dead have not been released. Their families were notified at the highway police station.
The A9 reopened after seven hours with a reduced speed limit. Investigators will reconstruct the crash using drone mapping and skid analysis this week.
