Two Hour Hostage Crisis At Manila Store Leaves Clerk Injured, Gunman Shot By Officers

Manila, Philippines— A two-hour hostage standoff at a convenience store in Manila ended Saturday with the suspect shot dead and a store clerk wounded.

The incident began at 1:20 p.m. on October 25, 2026 at a 24-hour store on Taft Avenue in Malate. The man entered to buy cigarettes, then pulled a .38 revolver and demanded cash. When the clerk hesitated, he locked the glass door and pulled her behind the counter, according to initial police reports.

Philippine National Police said the clerk managed to press a silent alarm. Patrol officers arrived within four minutes and found the store locked, lights on, and the suspect shouting inside. He held the knife from the store’s stock to the clerk’s neck while holding the gun outward.

A crowd gathered. Officers cleared the block and called the Special Weapons and Tactics team. Negotiators spoke to the man through the glass. He demanded a getaway motorcycle and threatened to kill the clerk if police came closer.

"He was agitated, sweating. He kept looking at the police line, then at the hostage," a barangay tanod who witnessed negotiations said. "The negotiator kept him talking about his family."

Philippine Daily Inquirer reported the suspect was a 31-year-old former delivery rider from Cavite, recently dismissed from his job. His family told police he had debts and had not slept for two days.

At 3:18 p.m., the suspect dragged the clerk toward the back storage room, out of view. The tactical commander authorized entry. Officers breached the front door with a shotgun blast to the lock. The suspect turned toward them with the gun raised.

Police fired three shots. The suspect fell inside the store aisle. The clerk was struck once in the shoulder during the exchange, likely by a ricochet. She was conscious when medics pulled her out.

The clerk was taken to Manila Doctors Hospital. Doctors said the wound was not life-threatening. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. PNP recovered the revolver, which had two live rounds left.

The store remained cordoned off for forensic examination. The street reopened at 5 p.m.
