Two Children Dead After House Fire Engulfs Home In Western Sydney, Community Mourns, Support Offered

Sydney, Australia— Two children were killed in a house fire that engulfed a single-story home in Western Sydney at around 2:10 a.m. Tuesday, despite desperate attempts by neighbors and parents to reach them.

The fire broke out in a fibro home on a quiet street in Mount Druitt. Fire and Rescue NSW said the front bedrooms were already fully involved when the first engine arrived within nine minutes. Flames had breached the roof. The parents, a 34-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man, were outside shouting that their children were still inside.

Neighbors reported hearing smoke alarms, then screaming. One man kicked in a side fence and tried to enter through a back window with a garden hose. He was driven back by heat and thick black smoke. "We could not get in. The smoke was too heavy," he said. "We just had to wait for the fireys. It was awful."

Firefighters forced entry through the front door and located the two children, aged 4 and 7, in a rear bedroom. Both were unconscious. Paramedics performed CPR on the front lawn. They were transported to Children's Hospital at Westmead but were pronounced dead on arrival. Their parents suffered smoke inhalation and burns to arms and were taken to Blacktown Hospital.

Police established a crime scene and called in specialist fire investigators and the arson squad as standard procedure for fatal fires. No accelerant has been identified at this stage. Initial examination points to an electrical fault in the living room, possibly a power board overloaded with heaters, but that remains unconfirmed. The home had working smoke alarms, according to preliminary checks.

The street was closed for most of Tuesday. Forensic teams in white coveralls moved in and out of the charred shell. The roof had collapsed over the central hallway. Burnt toys and a child's bicycle were visible on the front verge where firefighters had placed them during the search. Family liaison officers are with the parents.

Mount Druitt community members gathered at the site by mid-morning, leaving flowers and stuffed animals against the fence. A local church opened its hall for support services. The Department of Communities and Justice said it is providing emergency accommodation and counseling to the family and to neighbors who witnessed the blaze.

Western Sydney has seen a spike in winter house fires this year, with Fire and Rescue NSW attending more than 120 residential fires in October alone. The service renewed its warning about overloading power boards and leaving heaters unattended overnight. The cause of this fire remains under formal investigation.

The coroner will be notified. A report is being prepared. The house remains sealed and under police guard pending a full structural assessment.
