WARSAW, Poland — A dramatic collision occurred on Friday morning when a passenger train slammed into a heavy transport truck trapped on a railway crossing in central Poland, derailing the locomotive and causing widespread transit delays across the regional rail network.
Emergency responders, including local fire brigades and medical personnel, rushed to the scene following reports of the high-speed impact.
According to preliminary findings by railway police, the articulated truck became immobilized between the barrier gates across the tracks as traffic backed up along the intersecting roadway. Before the driver could maneuver the vehicle clear of the danger zone, an approaching intercity passenger train traveling at high speed struck the trailer section of the truck.
The force of the collision shattered the heavy vehicle, scattering cargo and twisted metal across both tracks and destroying overhead electrical catenary lines. The impact caused the leading car of the train to jump the rails before coming to a stop several hundred meters down the track.
Firefighters and rescue crews worked rapidly to secure the site, isolate damaged high-voltage lines, and evacuate passengers from the derailed train. First responders evaluated dozens of commuters on-scene, treating several individuals for minor injuries and shock, though miraculously no fatalities were reported at the site.
The truck driver managed to leap from his cab moments before the collision, escaping without serious physical injury. Ambulances transported injured passengers to nearby medical centers for further evaluation and preventative care.
National railway operators immediately halted all rail traffic along the affected corridor, deploying replacement bus services to transport thousands of stranded commuters. Repair crews equipped with heavy cranes and technical equipment have begun clearing the mangled debris and repairing damaged track infrastructure, a process expected to take several days.
State transport authorities and railway safety inspectors have opened a formal investigation into the crash. Investigators are reviewing onboard event recorders, signal telemetry, and crossing camera footage to determine whether driver error, signal malfunction, or traffic congestion contributed to the truck becoming trapped on the tracks.
