Tragic Tempest: 7 Dead as Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Batter South Bengal

KOLKATA, India — A deadly system of severe thunderstorms, torrential rainfall, and ferocious gusty winds swept across Kolkata and several districts in South Bengal, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming at least seven lives.

The extreme weather event, which caught many commuters and residents by surprise, uprooted hundreds of trees, snapped overhead power lines, and submerged low-lying urban areas, paralyzing regional transit and cutting off electricity to thousands of homes.

According to regional meteorologists, the tempest was triggered by a massive squall line fueled by intense moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal colliding with a low-pressure system. Within hours, the sky turned pitch black as the storm unleashed its full fury.

The storm was characterized by wind gusts reaching 88 kmph, which tore off roofs and toppled decades-old trees onto vehicles and houses. Intense, compressed rainfall quickly overwhelmed municipal drainage systems across Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and North and South 24 Parganas.

Furthermore, an unusually high frequency of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes accompanied the event, serving as the primary cause of casualties.

Disaster management officials confirmed that the seven fatalities occurred across various districts of South Bengal, mostly due to lightning strikes, electrocution from fallen wires, and wall collapses.

In Kolkata, a pedestrian was tragically crushed when a massive banyan tree toppled over under the sheer force of the wind. In the rural districts of Hooghly and South 24 Parganas, field laborers who were unable to find immediate shelter succumbed to fatal lightning strikes.

More than a dozen others sustained injuries from flying debris and shattered glass and are currently receiving treatment at regional medical centers.

The storm inflicted severe wounds on the region's infrastructure. In Kolkata, iconic thoroughfares were instantly transformed into waterlogged streams, stranding thousands of office-goers during the peak evening rush.

The state’s suburban railway network—the lifeline for millions of daily commuters—suffered massive disruptions after uprooted trees and branches fell onto overhead traction wires. Several local trains were halted mid-route, forcing passengers to walk along the tracks. Air traffic at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport was also temporarily suspended, with multiple flights diverted due to severe turbulence and poor visibility.

State administration and municipal bodies deployed emergency teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and civil defense personnel, to clear the blocked roads. Armed with Kolkata Police disaster teams and mechanical wood-cutters, workers labored through the night to remove fallen trees and restore basic vehicular movement.

The regional meteorological center has issued a continued yellow alert for the next 24 hours, warning residents that while the primary squall line has passed, isolated thundershowers and volatile wind patterns may still pose a danger. Citizens have been strictly advised to remain indoors during periods of active lightning and to avoid standing near weak structures or waterlogged electrical posts.
