KHETRI, Assam — A tragic highway accident on National Highway 37 claimed three lives and left three others critically injured after a hatchback carrying a family crashed into a roadside safety railing near Khetri in Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district early on Tuesday morning, October 6, 2026.
The victims were traveling in a Hyundai i10 when the vehicle reportedly lost control and slammed directly into the steel guardrail along the stretch of the highway. The force of the impact drove the metal railing through the vehicle, causing catastrophic damage and trapping several occupants inside.
Local residents who witnessed the collision rushed to the scene to assist before alerting local police and emergency medical teams. Three occupants, including a woman, died on the spot from severe injuries sustained during the impact.
First responders worked alongside local villagers using specialized cutting tools to extricate the trapped passengers from the mangled wreckage. Three other family members suffered serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for advanced emergency treatment.
Khetri police have initiated a preliminary investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Officials suspect that high speed or driver fatigue in the early morning hours may have contributed to the vehicle losing control prior to striking the guardrail.
Traffic along the NH 37 stretch was briefly disrupted while emergency personnel cleared the debris and removed the wreckage from the roadway. Authorities have impounded the damaged vehicle for technical inspection as police work to notify extended family members and complete formal identification protocols.
Local road safety advocates and residents have since raised concerns regarding the design and placement of steel guardrails along this hazardous stretch of National Highway 37, calling for immediate safety audits to prevent similar penetration risks in high-speed crashes. Assam’s Public Works Department (PWD) confirmed that a technical team will inspect the crash site to evaluate highway barriers and assess whether additional rumble strips and warning signage are needed to reduce speed-related accidents in the area.
