Geneva, Switzerland—An elderly resident died from severe smoke inhalation early Thursday morning when a fierce structural fire swept through a multi-story residential apartment building in Geneva. The blaze broke out shortly before 3:00 AM in a second-floor unit, sending thick toxic smoke billowing through the central stairwell and trapping sleeping tenants.
Automatic smoke detectors alerted startled occupants, prompting dozens of residents to flee toward the courtyard using exterior fire escapes. Fire brigades arrived within minutes of the initial emergency call, deploying heavy water lines and an aerial ladder platform to attack the flames.
Dense black smoke filled the upper hallways before firefighters could breach the heavy wooden door of the affected apartment. Rescuers located the elderly tenant unconscious in the bedroom area, having already succumbed to lethal concentrations of carbon monoxide and toxic combustion gases.
"Flames had fully engulfed the interior furnishings by the time our primary suppression team gained entry," said Fire Battalion Chief Antoine Dupertuis. "The high concentration of synthetic smoke made interior search operations exceptionally difficult."
Paramedics performed emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the sidewalk outside the building, but the victim could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other residents were treated on-site for minor smoke inhalation and acute psychological shock.
Municipal utility technicians shut off electrical and gas supplies to the entire building to prevent secondary hazards while structural engineers assessed damage. Forensic fire investigators cordoned off the burned apartment to sift through ash and analyze electrical wiring remnants.
Initial technical inspections point toward an electrical short circuit near a living room heating appliance as the probable ignition source of the fire. Social services mobilized emergency housing assistance for displaced tenants whose apartments sustained smoke and water damage.
Police authorities withheld the name of the deceased resident pending formal notification of extended family members living abroad. City officials announced plans for an urgent review of fire safety compliance across older residential properties in the district.
