LOS ANGELES — A violent outbreak at a party near California State University, Northridge (CSUN) left two people dead and led to the detention of dozens of individuals late on Friday night, October 2, 2026 triggering a massive police response near the university campus.
The incident unfolded shortly after 11:00 PM at University Plaza, a popular strip mall located just a block away from the CSUN campus on Nordhoff Street. Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers were initially called to the scene following reports of a large, rowdy party taking place on the building's upper level.
Upon arriving at the plaza, responding officers heard multiple gunshots echo from the venue, sending crowds of attendees fleeing into the surrounding parking area.
Officers entered the premises and located two victims—a young man and a young woman, both estimated to be between the ages of 18 and 25—suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. In the chaotic aftermath, at least one other individual sustained stab wounds during the commotion.
Following the gunfire, LAPD officers cordoned off the entire commercial plaza and detained dozens of young adults and teenagers who had been inside the lounge area. Aerial coverage showed investigators interviewing handcuffed individuals lined up outside businesses as detectives worked to identify potential witnesses and suspects.
Authorities are actively searching for a male suspect believed to have opened fire during the gathering. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear and homicide detectives are continuing their investigation.
In response to the violence in close proximity to student housing, CSUN administration issued a campus-wide safety alert, advising students to avoid the area while law enforcement operations continue. Student support services and crisis counseling were immediately made available to students affected by the traumatizing event, with university officials confirming that campus security patrols will be increased as a precautionary measure over the weekend.
Community members and local business owners in the Northridge neighborhood expressed shock and growing concern over security at commercial venues hosting large, unauthorized gatherings late at night. City officials noted that they plan to review safety protocols and zoning compliance for events held at commercial plazas across the area to help prevent similar tragic incidents in the future.
