ODESA, Ukraine — A civilian sailor has been killed and several crew members injured after a Russian missile struck a foreign-flagged commercial vessel docked at Ukraine's strategic port of Odesa, marking a sharp escalation in attacks on Black Sea maritime trade routes.

The targeted vessel, flying a neutral foreign flag, was in the process of loading commercial cargo when the strike hit without warning. The impact caused a localized explosion, setting off fires aboard the vessel and severely damaging the ship's superstructure and surrounding dockside facilities.

Port authorities and naval personnel rushed to control the flames and secure the area, while emergency medical teams boarded the damaged ship to administer aid to the injured crew.

"The attack hit the vessel while it was stationary at berth," local maritime officials reported. "Emergency fire crews managed to contain the blaze, but the structural damage to the vessel and cargo equipment is significant."

Maritime medical services confirmed that one foreign national sailor succumbed to fatal injuries sustained during the blast. At least three other crew members received immediate treatment for shrapnel wounds and blast trauma before being transported to a regional hospital in Odesa.

Emergency crews spent hours inspecting the hold and surrounding dock for potential unexploded ordnance and ensuring the vessel's hull remained stable to prevent any fuel leaks or sinking inside the harbor corridor.

The strike represents a dangerous continuation of targeted attacks on port infrastructure across Odesa Oblast, an essential corridor for Ukraine’s agricultural and industrial exports. International shipping firms have raised concerns over the security of civilian crews navigating the Black Sea maritime corridor amidst increasing risks of direct missile and drone strikes.

Ukrainian officials condemned the attack as a deliberate assault on international merchant shipping, calling on the global community and international maritime organizations to reinforce air defense support and enforce stricter protection for neutral shipping lanes.
