Tragedy in Yemen: Devastating Houthi Missile Strike Leaves 58 Dead and Hundreds Injured

SHABWA, Yemen — A brutal early-morning ballistic missile attack struck a government security forces training facility in Yemen’s energy-rich Shabwa province on Monday, leaving at least 58 personnel dead, over 200 wounded, and 14 others missing in one of the single deadliest escalations in the ongoing conflict.

The attack targeted the Al Alam training camp as recruits gathered following morning prayers and breakfast. According to local authority and military sources, three ballistic missiles struck the center of the training grounds without warning, sending lethal shrapnel across the crowded field.

A survivor described scenes of utter devastation and chaos as panic set in and calls for medical help echoed throughout the installation.

"We suddenly heard a loud explosion and shrapnel flew everywhere," said Nasser Sheikh Bahaj, a recruit undergoing medical treatment. "I sat holding my wound and heard my colleagues shouting for ambulances."

Surviving recruits and local transport drivers worked frantically to evacuate the seriously wounded. Dozens of victims were rushed via emergency transports and military vehicles to the main Authority Hospital in Ataq, the provincial capital of Shabwa, which quickly reached full operational capacity.

"We woke up for dawn prayers, then had breakfast and entered the training ground... suddenly we heard a loud explosion and shrapnel flew everywhere."— Nasser Sheikh Bahaj, Wounded Recruit Recruits noted that reconnaissance aircraft had been spotted hovering over the Al Alam camp for three consecutive nights leading up to Monday’s barrage, suggesting a calculated and deliberate strike.

The Iran-aligned Houthi movement quickly acknowledged responsibility for the assault, claiming the facility hosted forces managed directly by foreign allies. Shabwa Governor Awad Al Wazir condemned the assault, confirming the tragic casualty toll and detailing ongoing search efforts for those still missing beneath the rubble.

This devastating strike comes amid a sharp intensification of fighting across Yemen. Government forces have recently launched renewed campaigns to push back Houthi fighters near the strategic Bab Al Mandeb Strait—a crucial bottleneck for international maritime shipping.

With casualties mounting and fragile peace efforts shattered, humanitarian groups warn that the sudden resurgence in high-profile military engagements threatens to worsen what is already one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises. Aid agencies are bracing for increased displacement and urgent medical needs as regional dynamics grow volatile once again.
