KHARKIV, Ukraine — A tragic strike rocked a civilian area in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region when Russian loitering munitions struck a popular public park, killing six people, including two young girls, local officials reported.
The strike occurred during peak daytime hours while residents, families, and children were gathered outdoors. Eyewitnesses reported hearing the distinct high-pitched drone engines seconds before multiple detonations tore through the park's central walkway and playground areas.
Rescue workers and paramedics rushed to the scene to extinguish fires and clear debris. Emergency personnel confirmed that six individuals succumbed to fatal shrapnel injuries at the site, with two of the victims identified as young girls. Several other bystanders sustained varying degrees of injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
"This was a purely civilian space where parents bring their children to walk and play," said regional government representatives following an initial site inspection. "There are no military targets in the vicinity."
The blasts damaged nearby residential buildings, shattering windows, scorching parked vehicles, and leaving cratered pavement across the recreation grounds. First responders worked continuously through the afternoon to secure the perimeter and assist affected families.
Local authorities condemned the attack, calling it a deliberate assault intended to terrorize civilian populations in northeastern urban centers.
The Kharkiv region, located near the northeastern border, has faced heightened aerial bombardments, missile strikes, and heavy drone raids in recent months. The continued targeting of civilian infrastructure and public spaces has drawn renewed international condemnation from humanitarian organizations and foreign governments.
As emergency crews continue clearing the site and providing trauma support to surviving family members, local authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant and head to shelters immediately upon hearing air raid alarms.
In response to the tragic incident, regional civil defense agencies have announced plans to accelerate the deployment of additional mobile air warning systems and reinforced underground bomb shelters across public parks and community centers in Kharkiv. Meanwhile, international human rights monitors and international observers have begun gathering physical evidence and eyewitness testimony from the strike zone to document potential violations of international humanitarian law.
