Tragedy in Tuguegarao: 19-Year-Old Student Fatally Stabbed in Brutal Attack

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines — A dark cloud of grief has settled over the local youth and skating community following the tragic, untimely death of a 19-year-old student leader.

Zanter Troy Dela Cruz Soriano, a well-known university student and member of the "Boys of M3" Cagayan Valley Zone skating team, was fatally stabbed multiple times during the early hours of Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

According to initial police reports and eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred between 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. near the Steel Bridge along Bagay Road in Tuguegarao City.

The confrontation began when a group of junior high school students, who were skating in the area, was allegedly targeted and harassed by a group of older individuals. Seeing the younger skaters in distress, Soriano stepped in to defend them and defuse the situation.

His heroic intervention, however, quickly escalated. The confrontation erupted into a physical brawl, culminating in Soriano being brutally stabbed multiple times. Despite efforts to save him, the young student leader succumbed to his injuries.

The Tuguegarao City Police immediately launched an investigation and a pursuit operation following the attack. Investigators have identified at least six suspects believed to be involved in the violent altercation.

Authorities have successfully arrested four of the suspects in connection with the attack. Meanwhile, a manhunt is actively underway for the remaining two suspects, whom the victim's family has identified as siblings. Police are currently preparing heavy criminal charges against those involved, centering their case on the primary aggressors.

News of Soriano’s death has sent shockwaves through Tuguegarao City, with friends, relatives, and fellow skaters expressing deep grief and outrage over the senseless violence. He was remembered by peers not only as a passionate skater but also as a natural leader who looked out for others.

In a heartbreaking social media post, Soriano's relative, Vaine Soriano-Roles, voiced the family’s pain and their unrelenting pursuit of justice: "Patuloy kaming umaasa na mananaig ang katotohanan at makakamit ang hustisya. Hindi kami titigil hangga't hindi namin nakakamit ang hustisya para sa'yo, Tonton."

Local authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the two remaining suspects to immediately contact the Tuguegarao City Police Station.
