Tragedy in the West: Man Dies Following Horrific Shark Attack Off Albany Coast

ALBANY, WA — A family spearfishing trip has ended in unimaginable tragedy after a 35-year-old man was killed by a massive shark off the south coast of Western Australia. The horrific incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and marked the nation's third fatal ocean encounter in less than a month.

Emergency services were alerted just before 11:30 AM on Saturday, June 6, 2026, following frantic calls for help. The victim was diving near Michaelmas Island, a nature reserve located in King George Sound roughly 13 kilometers off the coast of the port city of Albany.

According to Western Australia Police, the man was spearfishing with family members when he was suddenly mauled by what authorities believe was a 4.5-meter shark.

Following the brutal attack, family members managed to pull the severely injured diver from the water and rushed him toward the mainland by boat.

They were met at the Emu Point boat ramp by multiple crews of St John Ambulance paramedics who immediately began emergency treatment. Despite a grueling two-hour effort by first responders to revive the man, his injuries were too severe, and he was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. WA Police confirmed that they are coordinating with local authorities and will prepare a formal report for the coroner.

The tragedy has reignited tense national debates over shark management and mitigation strategies. In recent decades, Australia has averaged fewer than three shark-related fatalities per year. This latest incident marks a devastating surge, being the nation's third fatal attack in just four weeks. The recent string of tragedies began on May 16, 2026, when 38-year-old spearfisher Steven Mattaboni was fatally mauled by a four-meter white shark near Rottnest Island.

Just over a week later, on May 24, 2026, 39-year-old spearfisher Michael Jensz suffered unsurvivable injuries in a suspected bull shark attack on the Great Barrier Reef. This grim pattern culminated on June 6, 2026, when the unidentified 35-year-old victim was fatally bitten by a 4.5-meter shark off Michaelmas Island.

"His thoughts are with the victim's family and friends, as well as the first responders," WA Premier Roger Cook said in a statement on Saturday afternoon, offering his deepest condolences to those affected by the sudden loss.

In the wake of the attack, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has taken over the marine investigation, working closely with local park rangers and surf life savers. Digital tracking via SharkSmart alerts confirmed a public report of a 4.5-meter predator of an unknown species in the immediate vicinity following the incident.

Authorities have urged extreme caution for anyone entering the waters around King George Sound and Michaelmas Island, warning locals and tourists alike to strictly adhere to all temporary beach closures.
