Tragedy in the Himalayas: Helicopter Carrying 6 Devotees Goes Missing Near Joshimath

JOSHIMATH, India — Panic and uncertainty swept through Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Friday, October 30, 2026 after a commercial helicopter carrying six individuals—five pilgrims and a pilot—abruptly lost contact with air traffic control and went missing over the high-altitude terrain near Joshimath.

The aircraft, operated by Trans Bharat Aviation, had taken off from the sacred shrine of Badrinath Dham and was en route to Sahastradhara helipad in Dehradun before disappearing near the Hathi Parvat region.

According to aviation authorities, the helicopter departed Badrinath early Friday afternoon. Shortly after takeoff, as the flight approached the rugged mountainous passes behind Hathi Pahar, communication cut out.

Local reports indicate that the high-altitude flight path was experiencing deteriorating weather conditions, including dense cloud cover, poor visibility, and light mountain snowfall. Local residents in nearby Chayi village reported hearing a heavy engine splutter followed by an abrupt silence, raising immediate fears of a high-altitude impact.

Upon confirmation of the lost signal, the Chamoli district administration immediately triggered emergency protocols, launching a multi-agency search operation.

Search and rescue operations were immediately mobilized across both ground and air channels. Contingents from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indian Army units stationed at Joshimath, local police, and medical personnel were deployed on foot to traverse the steep, rugged terrain toward Chayi village and the Hathi Pahar foothills. Simultaneously, two additional helicopters were pressed into service to conduct aerial reconnaissance over the dense valley, though low visibility and persistent rain continued to severely hamper flight efforts.

"Yes, it is possible that there has been a crash. The Army, our SDRF team, police team, and our health department team are reaching the site," stated Chandra Shekhar Vashishth, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Joshimath, as rescue operations mobilized.

The Char Dham Yatra routes, which draw hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually to holy shrines across the Himalayas, rely heavily on charter helicopter services. High-altitude weather turbulence in the Garhwal region remains a primary operational challenge for aviation providers.

Authorities remain in close contact with the families of those aboard as search teams push deeper into the treacherous mountain terrain to locate the missing aircraft.
