Tragedy in Thanjavur: 10 Severely Injured in Gas Cylinder Blast While Fighting House Fire

THANJAVUR — What began as a midnight act of neighborly bravery ended in a devastating tragedy early Thursday morning, July 30, 2026 after an LPG cooking gas cylinder exploded in a residential home, leaving at least 10 people severely injured.

The horrifying incident occurred around 2:00 AM at Chinna Ammankudi, a village near Thiruvonam in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district. According to local authorities, a sudden fire broke out at the thatched residence of Murugayan, a local farmer from the Lakshmipuram area, while his family lay fast asleep inside.

Alert neighbors first spotted flames eating through the highly flammable thatched roof structure. Acting quickly, they shouted to wake Murugayan's family, successfully helping them evacuate the burning home.

Determined to save their neighbor's property before emergency services could arrive, a group of local men and women gathered around the perimeter, using buckets of water to try and douse the rapidly spreading fire.

Tragically, none of the good Samaritans realized that a highly pressurized LPG cooking gas cylinder was trapped inside the kitchen area. As the intense heat compromised the tank, it violently detonated without warning.

"We rushed our children outside to safety while the men brought water to put out the fire," recounted Durgadevi, a local resident who witnessed the chaos. "No one knew a cylinder was inside, and it suddenly exploded."

The force of the blast ripped through the crowd of rescuers. At least 10 individuals sustained severe burn injuries, with some victims reportedly suffering burns across more than 80 percent of their bodies.

Among the wounded are the homeowner, Murugayan, and his 15-year-old daughter, Abhinaya. The remaining injured—identified by police as Kasinathan, Rajasekhar, Palanivel, Vembaiyan, Kalaiyarasi, Bhuvaneshwaran, Selvaraj, and Kaliammal—were all neighbors who had rushed to help.

Firefighters dispatched from Karambakudi eventually reached the scene to pull the victims from the debris and fully extinguish the flames.

Emergency responders deployed 108 ambulances to rush the victims to nearby medical facilities. Three of the injured are currently receiving medical attention at the Pattukottai Government Hospital.

However, the situation remains critical for seven of the victims who suffered the brunt of the explosion's thermal blast. They have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, where they are currently fighting for their lives.

As anxious crowds of relatives and villagers gathered at the hospital, local authorities deployed police personnel to maintain order around the emergency and intensive care departments. The Thiruvonam police have registered an official case and have launched a comprehensive investigation to pinpoint the exact cause of the initial house fire.
