Tragedy in Stade: Six Dead After Gunman Opens Fire at German Mother-and-Child Facility

STADE, Germany — A horrific mass shooting at a youth and family welfare facility in northern Germany has left six people dead and others wounded. Authorities have described the massacre as an "extremely cold-blooded" crime stemming from a bitter child custody battle.

The attack occurred around midday on Monday, June 29, 2026 at a facility on Dankersstrasse, just south of Stade's town center. The center provides temporary housing and vital services for pregnant women and young mothers with children.

According to Lüneburg Police Chief Kathrin Schuol, who is leading the investigation, the suspected gunman—identified as a 45-year-old man living in Hanover—had a scheduled appointment at the facility to discuss future custody arrangements for his three-month-old daughter.

The child and her mother were both present in the building when the suspect opened fire but miraculously escaped physical injury.

Instead, the gunman turned his weapon on the facility's staff. Investigators confirmed that all six fatalities—four women and two men—were child welfare workers shot "in a brutal manner" inside the building.

First responders arrived to a chaotic scene. Four victims were pronounced dead immediately, a fifth died shortly after at the location, and a sixth adult succumbed to severe injuries after being rushed to a nearby hospital. At least one other person remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Following the shooting, the gunman attempted to escape in a silver Mercedes driven by a 65-year-old woman described as having a close connection to his family.

Alerted by emergency calls, police quickly intercepted the vehicle on the B73 highway just outside city limits. When the driver failed to heed warnings to pull over, officers opened fire, shooting out one of the vehicle's tires to bring the getaway car to an abrupt halt.

Bystander video footage published by local media showed armed officers cordoning off the country road, ordering the occupants out of the vehicle, and arresting them as they lay face down on the pavement. Neither the gunman nor the driver was harmed during the apprehension. A third individual, the suspect's 34-year-old wife, was also detained for questioning.

While Germany maintains some of the strictest gun regulations in Europe, investigators revealed that the suspect did not possess a firearms license and had a prior police record for making threats. Authorities are still working to determine how he obtained the weapon.

Police have officially ruled out political extremism, terrorism, or organized crime. "It is not a case of femicide, nor does it involve a political background," a police spokesperson stated. "Rather, it is an extended family tragedy."

The tragedy has drawn widespread condemnation and grief from Germany’s top leadership. Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the event "deeply shocking," noting that "many people who were trying to help and protect others have lost their lives." President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also expressed his condolences, voicing his profound shock that such immense violence occurred in a space specifically designed to offer safety to vulnerable families.
