TAMENGLONG, Manipur — A Kuki woman was killed and her husband and young son were left injured early on Sunday morning, September 13, 2026 after armed attackers opened fire on their residence in Tollen village, situated within Manipur's Tamenglong district.
The pre-dawn assault occurred at approximately 4:00 AM in the remote settlement located along the National Highway-37 corridor. According to local reports, unidentified gunmen targeted the family home, firing indiscriminately into the structure while the occupants were inside.
The deceased woman, identified as Lhingjangai Singsit, died at the scene from gunshot trauma sustained during the firing. Her husband, Seineh Singsit, suffered serious gunshot wounds and was rushed to a medical facility alongside their youngest son, who was hit in the arm and body.
The remote geography and terrain of the Tousem sub-division initially complicated emergency evacuation efforts. Security forces dispatched units to Tollen village shortly after the firing ceased to secure the area and facilitate medical transportation for the wounded survivors.
The fatal incident coincided with September 13, a date observed within the community as Kuki Black Day (Sahnit Ni) to commemorate victims of historical regional conflicts.
Neighbours and local community leaders strongly condemned the violence. The Kaimai Village Authority issued a public statement describing the attack as a deliberate attempt to breach peaceful coexistence and spark division in the region.
"We urge the authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice," the village authority stated, while appealing to neighbouring communities to exercise restraint and prevent any escalation of tension.
Police and security agencies have initiated search operations in the surrounding areas and launched a formal inquiry into the attack. No group has officially claimed responsibility for the incident.
Following the tragic shooting, district security forces have heightened vigilance across Tamenglong and adjoining areas to prevent further escalation of ethnic tensions. Additional personnel have been deployed to secure vulnerable settlements and patrol key transportation routes along the National Highway-37 corridor. Civil society organizations and community elders have also convened emergency meetings to maintain communication channels between neighboring groups, urging residents to remain calm while law enforcement agencies carry out their investigation into the attack.
