Raging Wildfire Threatens Croatia's Dalmatian Coast as Flames Sweep Island of Brač

MILNA, Croatia — A fast-moving wildfire stoked by intense summer heat and unpredictable winds is sweeping across the island of Brač off Croatia's Dalmatian Coast, threatening coastal communities, tourist resorts, and vast stretches of dense pine forest.

Emergency crews responded rapidly as strong gale-force winds pushed the wall of fire across dry macchia vegetation and rough terrain, driving flames toward populated settlements including the coastal town of Milna. Firefighters from regional divisions across Split-Dalmatia County, supported by local volunteer units, were immediately dispatched to establish defensive lines and safeguard residential homes and civilian infrastructure.

Ground operations faced extreme difficulty overnight as shifting wind patterns repeatedly reignited active fronts along the rocky, steep slopes. First responders prioritized defending critical structures, utilizing high-capacity water tenders and mobile pumping units to hold back the advancing blaze near residential perimeters.

Aerial support units, including specialized Canadair water bombers and Air Tractor aircraft, joined the suppression campaign at first light. The planes conducted continuous water drops sourced from the surrounding Adriatic waters to cool high-intensity hotspots that remained inaccessible to heavy ground vehicles.

"Our priority is protecting human life and preventing the flames from breaching populated urban centers," stated a spokesperson for the Croatian Firefighting Association. "Crews are working under incredibly grueling conditions to maintain containment lines despite unpredictable wind shifts."

The Croatian National Fire Operations Center, alongside environmental safety officials, has launched an investigation into the precise origin of the wildfire. Authorities are inspecting transmission lines, remote agricultural clearings, and popular hiking access points to determine whether natural factors or human negligence ignited the blaze.

In the aftermath of the blaze, regional authorities and the Ministry of Agriculture plan to conduct comprehensive environmental impact assessments to evaluate damage to local biodiversity and olive groves. Municipal planners are also scheduled to re-examine vegetation management zones along island communities, expanding defensive firebreaks and upgrading early-warning detection systems to bolster long-term climate resilience across the Adriatic coastline.
