Tragedy in Malviya Nagar: At Least 20 Dead in Devastating South Delhi Restaurant Fire

NEW DELHI — A catastrophic fire tore through a crowded multi-story restaurant in South Delhi’s bustling Malviya Nagar market late Wednesday evening, June 3, 2026, killing at least 20 people and injuring scores of others.

The incident is one of the deadliest commercial fires the capital has seen in recent years, prompting a massive emergency response and putting a sharp spotlight back on urban safety regulations.

The blaze erupted around 8:45 PM, a peak dining hour for the popular commercial hub. Witnesses stated that the restaurant, which spans three floors including a packed rooftop seating area, was completely filled with families, college students, and office workers when the disaster struck.

According to preliminary reports from the Delhi Fire Service, the fire is suspected to have started following a series of sudden explosions in the building's basement kitchen—likely triggered by a leak in the commercial gas supply line. The explosions instantly ruptured the building's central air conditioning ducts, allowing thick, toxic smoke and flames to rush upward through the open stairwells within seconds.

"There was no time to react," said a survivor who was seated near the ground-floor exit. "Suddenly, the lights went out, and a wave of heat and black smoke rushed up from the basement. People were tripping over tables and chairs in absolute darkness trying to find a way out."

The Delhi Fire Service dispatched more than 25 fire tenders to the location immediately after receiving the distress call. However, rescue operations were severely hampered by Malviya Nagar’s notoriously congested alleyways and a massive gridlock of parked vehicles and onlookers surrounding the market.

Firefighters had to park their heavy vehicles several hundred meters away, manually dragging heavy hose lines through the narrow paths. Ladders were deployed to rescue panicked diners who had retreated to the building's windows and balconies.

Medical emergency officials confirmed that at least 20 bodies were recovered from the upper floors and rooftop. Most victims succumbed to asphyxiation and severe smoke inhalation before they could be reached. Over 22 other individuals were rescued with varying degrees of burns and injuries, with at least seven currently fighting for their lives in critical care units at nearby hospitals.

By midnight, senior Delhi police officials and disaster management personnel had cordoned off the structural remains to preserve the scene for forensic analysis.

The tragedy has immediately sparked outrage regarding systemic building code violations in the city's crowded commercial sectors. Local authorities have initiated a high-level probe to investigate whether the establishment had working fire extinguishers, clearly marked emergency exits, or a valid fire safety clearance certificate.

"A rigorous criminal investigation has been launched into the management and ownership of the establishment," a senior municipal official announced. "We will determine how a commercial kitchen of this scale was operating under these conditions. Those responsible for this structural negligence will be held fully accountable under the law."

The Delhi government has announced an immediate ex-gratia compensation package for the families of the deceased and has ordered an immediate audit of all high-occupancy restaurants and commercial buildings across the capital district to prevent further loss of life.
