Tragedy in Madhya Pradesh: 9 Dead After Consuming Toxic Bootleg Liquor in Sagar

SAGAR, India — At least nine people have died and dozens more have been hospitalised after consuming suspected spurious liquor in the Banda tehsil of Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district.

The incident came to light early Sunday morning, September 6, 2026 when residents from multiple villages—including Nauraj, Ghooghar Khurd, and Baraj—began experiencing severe symptoms such as intense headaches, vomiting, and vision impairment after drinking alcohol on Saturday night. Family members rushed affected individuals to Banda Civil Hospital, where several victims were declared dead on arrival while others were transferred in critical condition to Bundelkhand Medical College and the District Hospital in Sagar.

Medical officials suspect methyl alcohol poisoning as the primary cause of the sudden deaths, though formal confirmation awaits full post-mortem and chemical analysis reports. In response, Sagar District Collector Pratibha Pal and local health authorities dispatched emergency medical units for door-to-door screenings across the impacted hotspots to trace anyone who may have consumed the toxic brew and get them immediate medical care.

State leadership has ordered a comprehensive probe into the distribution network responsible for the illegal brew. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav directed senior officials and excise department personnel to the scene, vowing strict criminal action against anyone involved in the manufacturing or sale of illicit liquor in the region.

In the wake of the tragedy, law enforcement agencies launched a series of coordinated raids on suspected illicit distilleries across the district, resulting in the seizure of several hundred liters of unregulated alcohol and raw materials. Local police have detained multiple individuals for questioning, including alleged bootleggers and regional suppliers suspected of blending industrial chemical solvents into low-cost spirits.

Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers and community activists have staged protests outside government offices, demanding systemic reforms in state excise enforcement and increased compensation for the victims' families. State authorities have responded by suspending several local excise inspectors for negligence of duty, while promising an expedited trial process to ensure those responsible face severe legal penalties.
