GUWAHATI, INDIA — A devastating landslide triggered by heavy rainfall struck the Mathgharia locality of Guwahati, claiming the lives of three members of the same family after tons of earth and debris collapsed onto their residential home.
The incident occurred during the overnight hours following continuous torrents of rain that weakened the hillside soil above the neighborhood. The sudden shift in terrain caused a massive mudslide to sweep down the slope, burying the residential structure while its inhabitants were inside.
Trapped beneath the dense mud and debris, all three family members sustained fatal injuries before emergency responders could reach them. The powerful earth movement completely crushed the home, leaving the residence in ruins while inflicting severe structural damage on neighboring properties along the hillside.

Local authorities have issued warnings to residents living along vulnerable slopes and landslide-prone areas across Guwahati as heavy rains continue to saturate the region. Emergency teams remain on high alert, and officials are urging families in high-risk zones to temporarily evacuate to safer shelters while safety evaluations of the hillsides are conducted.
The tragic event has reignited discussions among urban planners and environmental experts regarding unmonitored slope excavation and hill cutting across the Kamrup Metropolitan district. Experts emphasize that rapid urban expansion into unstable elevated terrains, combined with inadequate drainage channels, drastically increases soil erosion risks during torrential monsoon periods, making hillside settlements increasingly vulnerable to catastrophic collapses.
District administration officials announced that financial relief will be extended to the surviving relatives of the deceased, while temporary relief camps have been established to accommodate displaced residents from adjacent high-risk zones. Engineering crews and geologists have been dispatched to inspect the Mathgharia hillside to assess soil stability and determine if further preventative evacuations are necessary along the slope.
