Tragedy in Gamawa: Deadly Youth Clash Leaves 1 Dead, 6 Injured in Buskuwa and Mabani

GAMAWA, NIGERIA — One person was killed and six others were injured following a violent clash between youths from the neighboring Buskuwa and Mabani communities in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

According to reports from the Bauchi State Police Command, the unrest began around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026 when three youths from Mabani village—identified as Babangida Musa (20), Usman Abdu (20), and Ya'u Muhammad (18)—were allegedly ambushed and assaulted with wooden sticks by suspected Buskuwa youths while traveling to Buskuwa. The attack left all three young men with varying degrees of injury.

The initial assault sparked a swift reprisal later that evening. A Mabani local, identified by police as Jumba Adamu, allegedly mobilized a group of youths to launch a retaliatory attack on Buskuwa. Armed with sticks, the group assaulted several residents, resulting in the death of one man, identified as Muhammadu Dare, who died at the scene from severe injuries. Six other individuals sustained injuries during the retaliatory assault.

Operatives from the Gamawa Divisional Police Headquarters, supported by local vigilantes and hunters, responded to the scene to restore order and evacuate the victims to the General Hospital in Gamawa. Attending medical personnel certified Dare dead upon arrival. Three of the injured victims were admitted for ongoing treatment, while three others were treated for minor injuries and discharged.

Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Habib confirmed that one suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the violence, while security personnel continue working to track down other perpetrators. The case is being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a full investigation. Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, strongly condemned the violence, urging community leaders and residents in both villages to maintain calm and refrain from further retaliatory acts.

Joint security patrols have since been intensified along the boundary between Buskuwa and Mabani to prevent further escalation. Local elders from both communities have agreed to meet with local government officials on Friday morning to assist in calming tensions and identifying remaining suspects involved in the violence.
