Tragedy in Donetsk: At Least 12 Killed as Russian Strike Hits Kramatorsk Bus

KRAMATORSK, Ukraine — A Russian strike hit a crowded passenger bus in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk on Thursday, killing at least 12 people and leaving scores injured, according to local authorities and emergency personnel.

The attack occurred during peak morning travel hours as the bus was navigating a busy route through the city, located in the war-torn Donetsk region. Eyewitnesses described a sudden, violent explosion that reduced the vehicle to a burnt-out metal frame and scattered debris across the roadway.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene to treat survivors and extract victims trapped in the wreckage. At least 12 fatalities have been confirmed, with local medical officials warning that the death toll could rise as several survivors remain in critical condition at nearby hospitals.

Regional military administrator Vadym Filashkin condemned the strike, characterizing it as a deliberate act targeting civilians. Local authorities reported that first responders and rescue crews were forced to work under the threat of secondary strikes, a tactic that has repeatedly targeted emergency workers across the region.

Kramatorsk, a critical urban hub in Donetsk, has been a frequent target of long-range strikes since the onset of the full-scale invasion. Ukrainian officials have renewed calls to residents in frontline communities to evacuate immediately as bombardment across the Donetsk region continues to intensify.

Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have initiated a war crimes investigation into the attack. Russian military authorities have not publicly commented on the strike.

International reactions poured in swiftly following the strike, with European leaders and international human rights organizations issuing statements condemning the loss of civilian life. Foreign diplomats reiterated their commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, emphasizing that civilian infrastructure and public transportation networks must be protected under international humanitarian law.

Meanwhile, local communities in Kramatorsk organized emergency blood drives and makeshift aid centers to support the families of the victims and those wounded in the blast. Despite the growing perils of daily life near the front lines, volunteer networks continue to work alongside municipal authorities to clear the damage, distribute aid, and assist residents preparing to flee the escalating conflict.
