Tragedy in Delhi: Massive Factory Fire Claims 4 Lives, Leaves 2 Injured

NEW DELHI — Four workers were killed and two others sustained critical injuries after a massive fire broke out late Friday night, October 30, 2026 at a footwear manufacturing factory in the Mangolpuri Industrial Area of Northwest Delhi.

Emergency services received an urgent distress call around 9:31 p.m. reporting a blaze inside a three-storey factory located in Phase-I of the industrial zone. More than 20 fire tenders were deployed to the scene, where firefighters battled thick clouds of smoke and intense heat to contain the inferno.

Officials reported that the fire originated in the building's basement, where inflammable materials and finished footwear were being processed and stored. The flames and toxic smoke rapidly traveled upward through the structure, trapping workers on the upper levels.

"The fire initially broke out in the basement. We managed to contain it within the basement to prevent further spread, but heavy smoke filled the entire structure. We recovered one person from the third-floor staircase and rescued five others from the fourth floor."— Paras Kumar, Assistant Divisional Officer, Delhi Fire Service

All six victims were pulled from the premises in an unconscious state and rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Medical personnel declared four of the workers dead on arrival, while two survivors remain hospitalized under intensive care.

Delhi Police have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Authorities have summoned the owner of the factory and are questioning contractors to verify how many laborers were present inside the facility when the incident occurred.

The tragedy has once again highlighted safety standards and regulatory compliance within industrial zones across the capital. Legal proceedings are currently underway as rescue teams complete cooling operations at the site.

In light of the fatal disaster, labor rights groups and safety advocacy organizations are urging municipal authorities to conduct immediate fire safety audits across all manufacturing hubs in Northwest Delhi. They stress that enforcing strict emergency exit mandates, installing functioning fire detection systems, and limiting the bulk storage of highly flammable materials in basement units are essential measures to protect industrial workers from preventable catastrophes.
