BOKARO, INDIA — Two individuals lost their lives following a fatal gas exposure incident at the ESL Steel Limited plant in the Bokaro district of Jharkhand.
The tragedy occurred at the plant’s integrated manufacturing facility located under the jurisdiction of Siyaljori Police Station in the Chandankiyari block. A company executive and an engineer affiliated with a business partner were exposed to toxic fumes within the worksite area, leading to their immediate collapse.
Authorities identified the deceased as Sohan Mahato, a resident of Ramgarh in Bokaro district, and Samir Ansari from nearby Dhanbad district.
Following the exposure, local emergency teams and plant safety personnel rushed to the scene. The impacted section of the plant was quickly sealed off by officials to prevent further exposure while police and technical experts gathered preliminary evidence.
Siyaljori Police Station officer-in-charge Ranjit Prasad Yadav confirmed that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations. Meanwhile, local administration and police officials met with plant management and labor union representatives to discuss safety protocol evaluations and financial compensation for the victims' families.
ESL Steel Limited—a subsidiary of Vedanta Iron & Steel Limited (VISL)—released an official statement regarding the incident.
"An unfortunate incident involving gas exposure occurred in the plant in which an executive of the company and a business partner engineer lost their lives," an ESL spokesperson stated. The steelmaker confirmed that it has launched an independent inquiry to determine the exact cause of the gas leak and will take appropriate action based on the investigation's findings.
In the wake of the tragedy, local labor unions and worker advocacy groups have voiced strong demands for a comprehensive safety audit across all industrial units in the district. They emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of occupational health and safety regulations to ensure proper ventilation, mandatory gas detection equipment, and enhanced emergency response protocols to protect plant personnel from future hazards.
