Tragedy in Anantnag: Massive Boulder Crushes Tourist Vehicle, Leaving One Dead

ANANTNAG — A tragic freak accident claimed the life of a tourist when a massive boulder rolled down a hill and crushed a moving vehicle in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The incident occurred along a mountainous stretch of road when a heavy rock suddenly dislodged from an overhead slope, hurtling directly onto the passing tourist cab. The sheer weight and force of the boulder caused extensive damage to the vehicle, trapping its occupants inside.

Emergency personnel and local residents rushed to the scene to conduct a rescue operation. Despite swift efforts to clear the debris and extricate the passengers, one man succumbed to severe injuries at the scene.

The deceased tourist was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby medical facility. Other occupants in the vehicle sustained injuries of varying severity and were immediately admitted for emergency medical treatment. Local hospital authorities confirmed that the injured are currently receiving care and are in stable condition.

Shooting stones and sudden rockslides pose a continuous hazard along mountainous transit routes in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly following rain, soil erosion, or seismic shifts.

Local police have registered an event report regarding the incident and issued advisory warnings to motorists navigating the high-risk terrain. Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise extreme caution when traveling along vulnerable hilly passes.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the critical need for enhanced safety infrastructure along Jammu and Kashmir's high-risk highway corridors. Local residents and transportation unions have repeatedly voiced concerns over the lack of protective steel netting, concrete retaining walls, and early-warning monitoring systems in prone zones. While disaster response teams remain stationed at key points during peak tourist seasons, advocates argue that preventive engineering measures are essential to stop preventable tragedies before they occur.

In response to the mishap, district officials have temporarily deployed highway patrol units to monitor active slide areas and manage traffic flow along the hazardous stretch. Drivers heading toward tourist destinations in South Kashmir are strongly advised to check weather updates, avoid night travel through steep passes, and adhere strictly to speed limits near designated rock fall zones while cleanup and slope stabilization work continue.
