Tragedy at Sea: At Least 6 Dead After Ferry Carrying 270 Capsizes Off Northern Cyprus

At least six people have been confirmed dead after a commercial passenger ferry carrying nearly 270 people capsized on Sunday, August 30, 2026, off the coast of Northern Cyprus. The vessel was en route from the port of Kyrenia (Girne) to the Turkish port of Taşucu in Mersin province when it unexpectedly took on water and overturned in open water.

The catamaran-style ferry departed Kyrenia at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members. Shortly into the voyage—roughly four nautical miles from the coastline near Diana Beach—the ship began rapidly taking on water for reasons that remain under investigation.

Eyewitnesses reported that the vessel listed severely before flipping onto its side, leaving dozens of passengers in life vests clinging to the capsized hull or stranded in open water.

Regarding the multi-agency response and current casualty reports, Turkish Cypriot Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı confirmed that six passengers lost their lives during the incident. In response, a joint operation involving the Turkish Cypriot Coast Guard, military helicopters, and commercial vessels was launched immediately to retrieve victims from the sea. Local fishermen and private boat owners from Kyrenia harbor also rushed to the area to help pull survivors out of the water. Onshore, over 150 survivors were brought back to Kyrenia port, where emergency medical teams and ambulances stood by to transport injured passengers to nearby hospitals.

Maritime safety authorities and naval engineers have launched a formal investigation into the vessel's weight distribution, structural integrity, and seaworthiness to determine what caused the sudden flooding. Rescue operations continue across surrounding search grids to ensure all remaining passengers and crew are fully accounted for.

Diplomatic representatives from both Turkey and Northern Cyprus have established a joint liaison task force at the port to assist grieving families and coordinate the repatriation of foreign nationals involved in the disaster. Meanwhile, maritime transport officials announced a temporary suspension of all regional ferry routes departing Kyrenia, ensuring that comprehensive safety and structural inspections are conducted across the remaining commercial fleet before normal passenger services resume.
