Tragedy at Pasir Ris: 24-Year-Old Man Killed in Sudden Lightning Strike Near Beach

SINGAPORE — A weekend family outing on the water turned catastrophic on Sunday afternoon, July, 5, 2026 after a sudden, devastating lightning strike claimed the life of a 24-year-old man and sent seven others to the hospital.

The incident took place off Pasir Ris Beach at around 4:50 PM. The victim, identified as Mikhail Benyamin—a dedicated part-time outdoor adventure and sea sports instructor—was out in the waters with his family when nature struck with fatal force.

Mr. Benyamin was part of a group of eight people—comprising five males and three females, aged between 13 and 54—who were kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding off the coast. According to eyewitnesses, the group was out in the sea when a bolt of lightning unexpectedly struck the water, hitting Mr. Benyamin directly while he was on his paddleboard. The shock caused him to immediately lose consciousness and fall.

Horrified onlookers and fishermen on the shoreline immediately noticed the crisis. One witness, 40-year-old Muhammad Fairuz, had been fishing nearby when he felt an electric "zap" run through his fishing rod right before the strike. Moments later, members of the group paddled frantically toward the shore, screaming that someone had been struck by lightning.

"Five members of the group suddenly paddled back to shore, with one of them shouting that his brother had been struck by lightning... Another person and I got into two kayaks and paddled out to bring the remaining three back."— Muhammad Fairuz, Eyewitness and Rescuer

Good Samaritans on the beach quickly hauled the unconscious man onto land and began administering emergency first aid. Several members of the public took turns performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a desperate bid to revive him before emergency services arrived. Witnesses noted the severe impact of the strike, observing burn marks and torn clothing on the victim.

The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) and police arrived rapidly at the scene near 131 Pasir Ris Road. Mr. Benyamin was rushed unconscious to Sengkang General Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

The remaining seven members of the group were transported to hospitals while conscious. SCDF confirmed that five other individuals were taken to Sengkang General Hospital, while two children were conveyed to KK Women's and Children's Hospital for evaluation.

The police have stated that based on preliminary investigations, no foul play is suspected, and investigations remain ongoing.

The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of Singapore’s highly volatile weather patterns. The Meteorological Service Singapore notes that the country experiences an average of 176 lightning days per year, with short, localized thundery showers heavily expected during the late mornings and afternoons of early July. Outdoor adventure firms and community members have expressed deep mourning over the loss of a promising young instructor known as a dedicated mentor to his peers.
