SOLUKHUMBU, NEPAL — Aviation and mountain safety concerns in Nepal's Everest region escalated Tuesday morning, November 3, 2026, after two high-altitude helicopters collided while attempting to land at the Pheriche helipad in Solukhumbu district. The accident left one passenger dead and a pilot severely injured.
The fatal incident occurred around 8:11 a.m. local time as aircraft operated by commercial charters Fishtail Air and Air Dynasty approached the remote landing site simultaneously.
According to initial reports from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) and local authorities, the collision happened when the main rotor blades of the two helicopters struck each other during their landing maneuvers.
The sudden impact caused immediate damage, bringing both aircraft down near the helipad. A foreign tourist aboard the Fishtail Air helicopter was killed in the impact, while the pilot sustained serious injuries.
"The two helicopters collided while attempting to land at the Pheriche helipad," a local official reported. "Rotor blades struck during the landing sequence, leading to the fatal crash."
Pheriche, situated at an altitude of approximately 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) in Ward 4 of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, serves as a vital medical and logistical hub for trekkers and mountaineers heading toward Mount Everest Base Camp.
Emergency response units, assisted by a Simrik Air helicopter, rapidly deployed to the high-altitude site to secure the crash area and evacuate victims. Medical teams rushed the injured pilot to a medical center for urgent stabilization before arranging emergency air transfer to Kathmandu.
Civil aviation authorities and the District Police Office in Solukhumbu have launched an official investigation into the cause of the collision, assessing weather conditions, air traffic visibility, and helipad coordination at the busy high-altitude facility.
The accident underscores the ongoing security and operational hazards of high-altitude helicopter operations in Nepal’s mountainous terrain, where variable wind patterns and limited landing space present continuous challenges for charter flights.
