An Evening Run, a Familiar Path, and a Silence That Follows

The evening light along the Brooklyn waterfront often carries a quiet promise—a chance to breathe, to move, to let the day loosen its grip. For a twenty-eight-year-old woman named Katie Suarez, that promise was part of a familiar ritual. She had left her job at a bank, met her mother briefly, and then set off along the Shore Parkway Greenway for a run, perhaps training for the marathon that would thread through the city’s streets in just a few days. The path by the water is the kind of place where strangers nod and keep moving, where the ordinary feels safe because it is ordinary.

That sense of safety was shattered on Friday evening. According to police reports, Suarez was stabbed multiple times in the neck along the greenway near Bay 17th Street. She was found by her father, who had grown worried when she did not arrive at their meeting spot, and who walked the path until he saw her beneath a tree, bleeding heavily . She was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital, where she has been declared brain dead and remains on life support. As of Monday, no arrests had been made, and investigators were still working to understand what happened .

The details that have emerged are sparse but unsettling. Investigators believe the attack may have been random, as her phone and jewelry were left untouched . Detectives have been reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with walkers, joggers, and drivers who may have passed through the area during the brief window when the attack is believed to have occurred . The New York Police Department has offered a reward for information leading to an arrest, and the department has urged anyone who was near the path that evening to come forward .

What lingers, beyond the facts, is the ordinariness of the setting. The Shore Parkway Greenway is not a remote trail or a forgotten corner. It is a place where people walk their dogs, ride bicycles, and fish from the promenade. The attack has left residents in Bath Beach and Gravesend grappling with a familiar and painful question: how does one hold onto a sense of security when violence arrives in a place that felt like home? A neighbor described Suarez as soft-spoken and kind, a bank teller who had worked at the branch for more than five years, a person who treated others with respect .

Her family has asked for privacy as they sit with the gravity of what has happened. The marathon she may have been training for will go on this weekend, threading through the five boroughs as it always does. But for one family in Brooklyn, the ritual of an evening run has become something else entirely—a reminder of how fragile the boundary can be between the everyday and the unthinkable.

The investigation remains open, and police have asked anyone with information to contact the NYPD. No further details about a suspect or a motive have been released.
