Torrential Downpour in Istanbul: Flash Floods Submerge Tuzla and Pendik Streets

ISTANBUL — Torrential rainfall swept across Istanbul, causing severe urban flooding across the city’s Asian-side districts. The downpour, which began overnight and steadily intensified into the early morning hours, transformed roadways into submerged waterways, leaving numerous vehicles trapped and triggering widespread commute delays.

Hardest hit were the eastern districts of Tuzla and Pendik, where low-lying avenues, underpasses, and major thoroughfares quickly filled with rising floodwaters.

As storm drains overwhelmed under capacity, several underpasses in the region filled rapidly. In Pendik’s Çamçeşme neighborhood, an underpass turned into a deep basin within minutes, stalling multiple vehicles whose engines flooded as drivers attempted to navigate through.

"We were completely caught off guard as the water rose around us. The engine just died," reported one driver stranded in the Çamçeşme underpass alongside his daughter, who were both assisted to safety by nearby bystanders before tow crews could arrive.

Emergency municipal crews and Turkish disaster management teams were deployed across Tuzla and Pendik to pump out standing water, clear clogged drainage networks, and pull stalled vehicles out of deep flood zones.

The sudden flash flooding caused severe gridlock during the morning rush hour. Traffic congestion levels spiked as drivers were forced to detour around flooded streets and closed underpasses. Local police diverted traffic away from vulnerable low-lying intersections and urged commuters to exercise extreme caution or avoid non-essential travel.

Meteorological authorities warned that intermittent rain and localized downpours could persist throughout the day, urging residents across Istanbul's eastern coastal districts to remain vigilant against further sudden surface flooding.

Amidst the cleanup efforts, urban planning experts pointed to the rapid infrastructure growth along the coastal corridor as a contributing factor to the heightened runoff vulnerability. City officials have promised a full review of the district's drainage capacities, announcing plans to fast-track upgrades to regional pumping stations and drainage networks to better withstand future severe weather events.
