Police Officer Dies After Vehicle Hit In South Africa, As Suspect Faces Murder Charges Today

Johannesburg, South Africa— A suspect was charged with murder at 11:00 a.m. on October 28, 2026, after a police officer was deliberately struck and killed by a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in Gauteng.

Police said Constable Thabo Mokoena, 34, was on patrol with two colleagues near the R21 highway in Tembisa when they flagged down a white Toyota Corolla suspected of carrying stolen goods. The driver initially stopped, then accelerated. He hit Mokoena and dragged him 15 meters. The officer died at the scene from head injuries.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the suspect, 29, fled on foot but was caught 2 km away after a chase. "The member was doing his duty protecting the community, his death is a direct attack on the state," she said. She said the vehicle was later found abandoned with blood on the bumper. The suspect has prior convictions for theft.

The incident was captured on a patrol car dashcam. Police said the footage shows the officer standing in front of the vehicle with his hand raised. The car lunges forward. Colleagues opened fire but missed. The video is now part of the case docket. It will be shown in court.

Police unions reacted angrily. The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union said officers face daily danger from motorists who refuse to stop. "We have lost 28 officers to vehicle attacks this year alone," said a POPCRU organizer outside the Tembisa station. He called for heavier sentences for killing police.

The suspect appeared briefly in the Tembisa Magistrates Court on Tuesday afternoon. The court heard he faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and reckless driving. He did not apply for bail. The magistrate postponed the case to November 4 for further investigation. The courtroom was packed with officers in uniform.

Mokoena leaves behind a wife and two children. He served 12 years in the SAPS. Colleagues described him as calm and by-the-book. One colleague who was with him at the time is receiving trauma counseling. Police said the family will get full benefits and a ceremonial funeral.

The National Commissioner of Police ordered all stations to review safety procedures for vehicle stops. The directive says officers should never stand directly in front of a suspect vehicle. The union said the rule exists but is hard to follow on narrow roads at night.

As of evening, the suspect remains in custody at Rabasotho police cells. Investigators said they are checking if the vehicle was hijacked earlier in Kempton Park. The officer's body was taken to the government mortuary for autopsy.
