Three Dead, Two Injured After Hillside Landslide Buries Homes In Central Vietnam, Rescue Teams Dig Through Mud

Quang Nam, Vietnam— A hillside landslide buried several homes in central Vietnam early on November 1, 2026, killing three residents and injuring two others as heavy rains loosened soil across the region.

The slide happened around 3 a.m. in a mountain hamlet. Soil, rocks and trees slid down from a deforested slope. Three houses were hit directly. Walls collapsed. Roofs were covered in thick mud. Neighbors heard a roar and then shouting.

Local militia and rescue teams arrived at first light. They dug with shovels and excavators. One body was found inside a bedroom. Two others were found near a kitchen area. Two injured people were pulled out alive and carried down the hill on stretchers.

"The ground was saturated for days. Then it gave way all at once. We had warned families to move but some stayed," a commune official said at the site. He said 12 other households were evacuated to a community hall.

Central Vietnam faces repeated landslides during the monsoon. Hills have been cut for farming and roads. Drainage is poor. When rain totals pass 200 millimeters in 24 hours, slopes fail.

Authorities said the injured were taken to a district hospital with broken bones and cuts. One is in serious condition. The dead include a mother and her teenage daughter, according to local media. Their names have not been officially released.

Provincial leaders ordered checks on 15 other high-risk slopes. Soldiers were sent with tarps and rice. The provincial disaster committee said more than 100 people remain in temporary shelters after earlier floods this week.

Meteorologists said rain will continue for another two days. The national weather center issued a landslide alert for five provinces. River levels are rising again.

Rescue crews are still clearing debris. Officials fear another slide from the same hillside if rain does not stop.
