Three Dead in Tolima Landslide: Rural Settlement Destroyed by Massive Mudslide, Emergency Teams Deployed

Ibague, Colombia— A massive landslide buried a rural settlement in Tolima on October 16, 2026, causing three confirmed fatalities, and rescue crews worked with shovels and a single excavator to reach homes under meters of mud. The slide came at dawn. No warning was given.

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management said heavy overnight rain saturated the slope above the hamlet of El Bosque in the municipality of Fresno. The hillside collapsed around 5 a.m., dragging trees, rocks, and soil over at least six houses. Three bodies were recovered by midday. Three more people are missing.

Residents said they heard a deep rumble, then saw the hill move. "It was like the mountain fell. We ran uphill. Houses disappeared," a farmer told El Espectador. He lost his brother. The settlement is accessible only by dirt road, now blocked.

Firefighters from Fresno and Mariquita, along with Civil Defense, arrived after two hours. Access was delayed by mud on the road. They used picks and hands where machines could not enter. A drone was flown to map the slide extent. The area remains unstable.

A UNGRD official said, "We have three confirmed dead, including a minor. Search continues. The soil is still moving. We evacuated 40 families downstream." He said 12 houses were destroyed and another 20 at risk. The landslide is estimated at 30,000 cubic meters.

Tolima has faced repeated landslides this rainy season, with deforestation and informal construction on slopes increasing vulnerability. Early warning systems exist but coverage in rural zones is poor. The Fresno mayor had requested slope stabilization last year. Funds did not arrive.

The departmental government declared a public calamity and requested humanitarian aid. Shelters were opened in a school. The Institute of Hydrology warned of continued rain for 48 hours.

By afternoon, families waited on a ridge above the slide, watching rescuers dig. The mud was thick. Rain started again. Crews kept digging.
