Three Crashes, One Afternoon, and a City Left Wondering

There is a fragile rhythm to a city afternoon, a quiet assumption that the ordinary movements of ordinary people—crossing a street, driving home, walking with children—will end as they began. On Monday afternoon in Winnipeg, that assumption was broken three times in the span of a single hour, leaving one man dead and seven others injured across a city that will need time to absorb what happened.

The first collision came at Portage Avenue and Main Street, one of downtown Winnipeg's busiest intersections. A man in his 70s was driving when his vehicle mounted a curb and struck a pole. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead. Police said the collision was not criminal in nature, a determination that offers little comfort to those who knew him but at least spares the family the weight of blame .

Then, just after 4:30 p.m., a second crash unfolded at Pembina Highway and Plaza Drive in the city's south end. A Ford Fusion was traveling northbound through the intersection on a green light when a westbound Honda Fit, driven by a woman in her 70s, ran a red light and struck it. The impact sent the Honda mounting the sidewalk, where it struck three young children who were with an adult .

The children were taken to hospital in stable condition with what police described as minor injuries. The Honda's driver and her passenger, a man in his 80s, were initially taken to hospital in unstable condition before being upgraded to stable. The driver was issued a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act, and the traffic division continues to investigate .

A third collision followed at 5 p.m. on Sterling Lyon Parkway near the Seasons of Tuxedo shopping area. A vehicle traveling eastbound struck a westbound vehicle that was turning in front of it. The westbound vehicle then crashed into a light standard, crushing its roof. Two people were taken to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable .

The three crashes were unrelated, police said, though they occurred within roughly ninety minutes of each other across different parts of the city. Near the Pembina Highway intersection, traffic lights were affected for several hours. At Portage and Main, the closure lasted from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., a reminder of how quickly a single moment can disrupt the flow of an entire city .

Police are asking anyone with information, surveillance footage, or dashcam video of the Pembina Highway collision to contact the Traffic Unit at 204-986-7085. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 .
