At 34,000 Feet, a Cockpit Became the Scene of a Fight

There are moments when the ordinary machinery of air travel—the boarding pass, the safety card, the soft hum of engines at cruising altitude—gives way to something no passenger expects. On Wednesday morning, a routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv became one of those moments. What began as a two-hour journey across the Middle East ended with a cockpit stained in blood, an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, and a question no one yet can answer: how did a pilot come to attack his colleague midair?

FlyDubai Flight 1073, a Boeing 737 Max 8, departed Dubai at around 3 a.m. GMT carrying between 160 and 180 passengers, most of them Israeli. The flight had been underway for a little over two hours when, at approximately 8:20 a.m. local time, it began a sudden and violent descent over northwestern Saudi Arabia, near the border with Jordan. Flight-tracking data examined by BBC Verify showed the aircraft dropped 17,000 feet in less than two minutes.

At 08:44 local time, Tabuk Airport's air traffic control center received a distress call. The plane requested an emergency landing. Seven minutes later, the transponder switched to squawk 7500—the international code for unlawful interference, commonly understood as a hijacking signal. It landed safely at Tabuk Airport at approximately 9:45 a.m. local time.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a video statement, said one of the pilots "stabbed the other pilot and apparently tried to crash the plane". He described it as a failed attempted hijacking. According to Netanyahu, a passenger and a crew member broke into the cockpit to "neutralize" the pilot-assailant, while another crew member stabilized the aircraft. The suspected assailant was arrested by Saudi authorities and is being questioned.

The airport in Tabuk confirmed that both the captain and first officer sustained injuries and were taken to hospital, though it did not state how those injuries occurred. Israeli officials said the Israeli authorities are investigating the possibility that the altercation was an attempted attack on Israelis, among other lines of inquiry.

Passengers described scenes of chaos. Yasmin Abukasis, whose daughter was on board, told journalists her daughter heard screaming as a pilot called for help. "The plane start to lose control. So all the people, they scream, they think they are going," she said. Another passenger told Israeli media that the crew asked for help from passengers to tackle the attacker and tie him down. A graphic video verified by The New York Times showed three men tending to two injured men on the cabin floor, both appearing to be bleeding, with at least one wearing what appeared to be a FlyDubai pilot uniform.

Much of what happened aboard the flight remains unclear, including the exact sequence of events and any confirmed motive. FlyDubai said its crew secured the aircraft and that all passengers were safe and accounted for. The airline sent two replacement aircraft to Tabuk to collect the passengers and crew and take them to Tel Aviv.
