Houthi forces threatened to strike Saudi Aramco facilities and Riyadh airport if the Saudi-led coalition attacks Sanaa, as cross-border hostilities intensify and economic costs mount.

The Targets Are Named, and the Region Braces

There is a grammar to war that becomes familiar over time—the claim and counterclaim, the threat and the strike, the names of places that cycle through the news with a rhythm that dulls their meaning. But occasionally, a warning arrives that carries a different weight, a specificity that makes the danger tangible. On Tuesday, the Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree posted a message on social media that did exactly that: he named the targets. The headquarters of Saudi Aramco in Dammam. King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. An Aramco refinery in the capital. He urged civilians and workers to evacuate those locations immediately .

The warning came in response to a Saudi-led coalition directive ordering civilians to leave the al-Sabahah central station of the Yemen Oil Company in Sanaa, ahead of a planned military operation . It was a threat answered by a threat, each side announcing its intentions in advance, each side giving the other's civilians a chance to flee. The conflict between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition has escalated sharply in recent days, with the Houthis claiming missile and drone attacks on airports and energy facilities across Saudi Arabia, and the coalition conducting dozens of airstrikes on Houthi-held areas in Yemen .

The Houthis have described their operations as retaliation for what they say were sixty Saudi airstrikes and missile attacks in a single twenty-four-hour period targeting Sanaa and the provinces of Al-Jawf, Taiz, Hajjah, Saada, and Marib . They put the total number of airstrikes since the escalation began at 1,576. The Saudi-led coalition, for its part, has reported intercepting drones north of Riyadh and has not publicly commented on the Houthi claims of successful strikes on airports and refineries .

The human and economic costs are mounting. A Houthi attack on Riyadh's airport on Saturday killed thirteen people and injured hundreds, according to reports, and forced the suspension of airport operations . The International Monetary Fund has forecast that Saudi Arabia's economy will contract by 3.3 percent in 2026, a revision five percentage points below its July estimate, with the Houthi attacks not yet factored into the projection . The Houthis now control the Bab al-Mandab strait and the entire Yemeni coastline along the Red Sea, giving them the ability to disrupt a critical global shipping lane .

Saree's warning to international airlines was explicit: Saudi airspace, except over Mecca and Medina, is now within the group's area of operations . The message to oil workers was equally direct: every Aramco facility is a "legitimate target," and they should stay away to avoid risking their lives . These are not idle threats. The Houthis have demonstrated both the capability and the willingness to strike deep inside Saudi territory, and their arsenal of ballistic missiles and drones has proven difficult to fully intercept.

The conflict in Yemen has been ongoing since 2014, when the Houthis seized Sanaa and much of the country's north. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government . What has changed in recent weeks is the intensity and the reach of the exchanges. The warnings issued this week—the naming of specific targets, the evacuation orders, the coordinates published online—suggest that both sides are preparing for something larger. In a war that has already lasted more than a decade, the question is not whether the violence will continue, but where it will land next.
