The Season Turned Overnight, and the Advisory Came First

There is a particular moment in autumn when the season stops merely hinting at change and begins to insist upon it. In Toronto, that moment arrived this week with a yellow-level frost advisory from Environment Canada, a quiet announcement that the growing season is drawing to a close.

The advisory covers Toronto, Mississauga, and Brampton, with freezing temperatures expected Friday night into Saturday morning. Temperatures are forecast to fall to near or slightly below zero overnight, particularly for areas north of Highway 401, while closer to Lake Ontario, conditions will be a few degrees warmer . Toronto is expected to see a high of 11 degrees Celsius on Saturday and a low of 2 degrees, with a risk of frost returning Saturday night under clear skies .

Rob Kuhn, a severe weather meteorologist with Environment Canada, said the frost is perfectly normal for this time of year. “This may signal the actual official end of our summer growing season,” he said . The agency is warning of possible damage to plants, trees, and crops, and urges residents to cover sensitive outdoor plants or bring them inside .

For those who garden, the advice is practical and time-sensitive. Tender plants that have thrived through the warmer months are vulnerable to the first frost, and a few hours of preparation can make the difference between loss and survival. Kuhn advised covering plants or bringing them indoors where possible .

The frost is expected to subside by Sunday, when a high of 16 degrees Celsius is projected with sunny skies. The warmer weather looks to continue into next week, with temperatures returning to above 20 degrees by midweek . “Next week looks lovely,” Kuhn said. “I think we’re going to be back over 20 degrees again in a few days” .

For now, the message is simple: the first frost has arrived, and with it, a reminder that the seasons do not wait. Residents are encouraged to take protective measures for their plants and to prepare for cooler overnight temperatures.
