IMPHAL, India — Fresh violence has reignited ethnic tensions in Manipur after two members of the Meitei community were killed and several others injured in an alleged ambush by suspected Kuki armed groups near the Uyumpok–Nongshum area in Imphal East district.
The attack occurred during the morning hours near Uyumpok Hill along the border between the Meitei-dominated valley and the surrounding hill districts, an area that has remained volatile amidst ongoing regional conflict.
According to local reports and emergency officials, the victims were ambushed while carrying out routine daily activities near the foothills. Armed assailants reportedly opened fire from elevated positions on nearby hills before fleeing deeper into the forested terrain.
Emergency responders rushed the casualties to a medical facility in Imphal, where two individuals were pronounced dead upon arrival from bullet injuries. Medical staff confirmed that the injured survivors are currently receiving emergency treatment, with additional security personnel deployed to guard the facility.
News of the attack triggered immediate outrage across the district. Angered by the sudden killings, grieving family members and local residents transported the bodies of the victims toward the capital city, staging demonstration protests outside government premises to demand justice and heightened security for vulnerable border villages.
Police and security forces moved in to manage the protesting crowds, cordoning off sensitive areas in Imphal to prevent potential civil unrest.
"Tensions remain high across the border zones of Imphal East. Patrols have been intensified to ensure public safety and prevent any further escalation of violence," stated a security official on the scene.
In response to the incident, combined security forces—including state police and paramilitary units—have launched joint search and combing operations across the surrounding hills of Nongshum and Uyumpok. Surveillance has been heightened along vulnerable ridge lines to track down the armed assailants responsible for the assault.
Local leaders and human rights advocates have called for an immediate investigation into the breach of security and urged authorities to deploy additional frontline checkpoints to protect civilian populations residing in fringe locations.
